Hi,
I’m Nerissa. A pianist, accompanist, music educator, life coach, yoga enthusiast, mother of four and lover of life on a continuing mission in helping YOU become the person you most want to be, through my music, yoga and life coaching services.
Born and educated in Mumbai and the UK while currently living in Dubai, my journey started when I was around 5 years old. I remember my dearest mother saying that I used to ‘tinkle away’ at the piano keys while my elder sister was practicing and that led her to send me for piano lessons. Did she know then that I would one day become the person I am today? I wonder.
I am often asked ‘what do you do’?
For as long as I can remember, I have always been a lover of music, playing the piano from the age of 6. If there was a competition or concert, I was in it. During my early years, I took part in countless concerts and won several competitions. I loved the thrill of winning competitions and can’t deny the fact that I enjoyed the honour and fame it brought too. But as I journeyed through life, got married and had my four beautiful children, my interest in the mind-body connection became stronger.
While I was always inclined towards the deeper, more spiritual aspects of life, it was only when I lost both my dearest parents to a brave but horrendous battle with cancer, I went through a deep soul searching time in my life when I wanted to know everything about the spirit connection too. At the same time, a desire to study further was building in me and so after having four children I went back to university to study for a three year masters degree course in music education. The focus of my dissertation was on music performance anxiety and consequently the mind-body-spirit connection which so often can be ignored in music teaching.
My research led me to exploring NLP (neuro linguistic programming), life coaching and yoga - and through these methods experiencing a more holistic approach and attitude to living, teaching and particularly helping students with anxiety. As yoga teachers often say, you never know what your students are bringing to the mat, I believe that you never know what your music students are bringing to the piano stool too. The more equipped you are with tools to help them deal with their issues, the more the difference you can make in their lives.
While I have had my share of ups and downs, successes and faults, my journey nevertheless has been one of deep learning. It has taken me down many diverse pathways and unusual breakthroughs, all of which have led me to a deeper understanding of this unfathomable mind-body-spirit connection, an acute awareness as a teacher, a profound connection within myself and an appreciation for the great gift of life.
My GOAL is to help you live a fulfilled life of purpose, passion and wholeness. This is the driving force, the thread that links all that I do. I believe that no matter what your dreams, age or obstacles, you have the power to change your life and by doing so, change the world.
